Preamble:
Since its formation, Lok Satta Party’s people-centered ideas, agenda, articulation and structure and functioning have found wide acceptance. It has achieved remarkably high levels of credibility in an extremely hostile political climate. It has exceptionally high credibility and a near universal respect for the values it espouses and practices. The Party already has offices established in every district of Andhra Pradesh, and in a vast majority of the mandals and more than 90% municipal towns and cities. Increasingly, Lok Satta Party is being accepted as ‘the only ray of hope’ for transforming the political culture of India.
At the same time, Lok Satta Party is strengthening its efforts to build a strong leadership, robust local organization and adequate resources. In addition to these efforts it is to build a genuinely democratic, member-owned and managed party. Until now, there were only two membership models for political parties in India: 1) Memberships having high entry-barriers or Memberships with elite members, 2) “Mass-based” membership which is target driven and mostly non-serious and /or bogus data.
Lok Satta Party has attempted to build the party membership base over the past few years with low entry barriers, nominal membership fee, etc. However, this attempt has yielded the results of non-serious membership, inadequate leadership being built at the grass root level, inability of members to mobilize adequate resources, membership numbers not being translated into votes, etc. To be realistic, many other parties are facing the same challenge and even more so. Then how are they not trying to overcoming it? The reason is that they adopt shortcuts with mercenary membership culture, vote-buying, taking party funds (99% unaccounted) by offering benefits when they come to power etc.
To change all this, Lok Satta Party is now adopting the Western European model of serious, committed, due-paying members who sustain both the activities as well as the finances of the party on a continuous basis. It is from such a committed membership that genuine leadership emerges.
The following document/faq’s highlights the features of this new membership type, the various membership fee structures and related items.
Why funds/membership fee?
The party requires funds required to run offices at districts, constituencies, mandals / divisions including the state and national offices with which the party can always be connected to the people to find solutions for their problems and to take the party to the grass root level.

What are the advantages in becoming a Member of a Political Party?
Becoming a member of a political party is one of many ways to get involved in the political process. While it is seen as more conventional and traditional, this is no reason to be deterred from gaining membership into a party. You may be confused however as to where to begin on this journey or you may even be on the fence as to whether or not you want to really join one of these organizations. First off, you really don’t have anything to lose by joining a political party. In fact, you only have a ton to gain by becoming a member of a political party. Here are a few benefits of party membership to consider...
- You can take part in the nomination process of candidates and so while election time you will personally know the person running on that poster you’ve been seeing all over town.
- Most political parties have youth wings, mahila wing, workers wing, senior citizens wing, housewife’s wing, working women’s wing, software engineers wing, professionals/officers wing, NRI wing etc so that you can find a group matching your frequencies so that you can work with passion to achieve common interests.
- You will become more involved in the political process and through this become more politically aware.
- Along with party membership comes invites to social events. The empty space on your current social calendar can be filled up with many social gatherings by which you can add flavor to your life.
- You will meet hundreds of new and exciting people, and chances are that if they have joined the same party as you, their value base is probably similar to yours and you may become friends.
- It is one of the best avenues for influencing the political process. You can give your input on issues and may influence party leaders and candidates. If your party or local candidate comes into power, your views and influence may reach all the way from MLA’s office till the Prime Minister's Office.
- Party membership is not made public record and is usually maintained confidential.
- Cost of party membership fees is usually nominal and any such fee/donations are tax deductible.
- By involving in the political process you feel that you are a valued and bonafied citizen and thereby you get extreme levels of satisfaction million time more than a person who is wealthier or better than yourself.
- By being a social person always sharing your ideas you develop inter personal skills required for your professional life. Moreover, by keeping yourself occupied and active, you can live healthier and happier.
This is just a starting point. So use that imagination of yours and imagine what other benefits you can gain from joining a political party. It’s a wonderful place to gain entry into the political sphere and to see some real effects of your influence. What’s even more exciting is if you convince your friends to join you, there is strength in numbers and you may be really able to succeed in influencing the political process.
How to choose the best political party?
The first step is to find a political party that is to your liking. There are many political parties in India who just need your vote and their aim is just coming to “POWER” and being in “POWER”. They aim at gaining power at any cost, even at the cost of nation. They do not believe in enabling people live their lives with peace and harmony. They divide and rule. They make people completely depend on the governments and will not show them permanent solutions. They precipitate things without solutions for decades and sometimes even centuries as they do not want people to be united. They do not cultivate habits like “humanity-humility”, “one nation – one community- one goal” and do not want the citizens to be “literate-intelligent-independent-tolerant-wise-generous”. They do little good to 10% of the population, project and publicize the same as whole-sum development and let the rest suffer absolutely with no hope on their future. They maintain dual standards in all sensitive issues and do vote-bank politics and put the future of next generation in dark.
Explore and Find the party which you really like to your conscious.
Once you find a party you like, contact them and ask about membership. Political parties should literally be knocking down your door asking you to join; however, sadly this is not the case in India, or anywhere else for that matter. Parties aren’t recruiting members like they should be! They usually take people who evade taxes and possess lot of black money and use that money for party activities and later when the party comes to power they will help such donors to earn 10-20 times of their investment. Moreover they pollute the minds of below middle class and poor people with some freebees, liquor, cash transfers, bribing the voters during the polling time etc and make mockery of democracy and hard-earned independence.
But you have to search a party which doesn’t poison the society for their own personal benefits and power hungriness. You have to believe in such a party which believes in making people own the party and runs its offices & does its election campaign with the membership dues abiding to the rules and regulations of the Election commission and IPC.
By now you should be taking a decision to become a member of a clean political party and the fun can begin! You can decide how involved you want to be in the process, from trying to recruit new members for the party and doing some volunteering, to simply coming out to events when invited or even simply voting when it is time to nominate riding candidates. The thing to remember is that there is nothing to lose by joining a political party and a lot to gain. For this reason, become involved now and maybe one day you will be one of these “representatives” we talk about so much.
Why Lok Satta Party?
All of us are aware of regionalism, communalism, casteism and other serious problems as discussed above plaguing our nation. Our tolerance & helplessness to these problems is only allowing the power-hungry politicians to make a mockery of our hard-fought democracy. We feel marginalized in this big political game. But as Eleanor Roosevelt said "Nobody can hurt us without our consent"; similarly we can say: Nobody can marginalize us without our consent. It is high-time we, the concerned and caring citizens of India, all stand up and act together against these corrupt, self-serving political parties.
You might say: "I want to do something, but I don't know what to do"; "I want things to change, but what can I alone do to bring about the change...”.
We are proud to say that Lok Satta welcomes all such honest and sincere citizens of this great nation who want to contribute something to put the nation back on track and bring back the heritage that we have lost. Lok Satta has the impeccable track record and got many remarkable achievements to its credit including voter registration through post offices, local courts for speedy justice, exposing criminals in politics, a political funding reform law, right to information law and many other reforms. We are also proud to say Lok Satta never plays with the sentiments and weaknesses of the people. It is neither a family nor a caste based party. It just believes in the value of good governance in fulfilling human potential. For years we have been advocating simple, practical and permanent solutions for overcoming India's problems, and for harnessing our abundant human and natural resources. Millions of kids even today do not go to school; millions more do not have access to basic health care. Can there be a greater sin than unfulfilled potential and avoidable suffering?
We at Lok Satta strong believe that together, we can bring about the much desired change – a change where every citizen can hope to live in dignity, have opportunity for vertical mobility with access to speedy justice. Lok Satta, with its 12 long years of close interaction with people of this nation is quite confident that such a day is not far off.
We request all the caring citizens of our great nation to be a part of this new political movement for freedom.
